Now that we're about to enter the summer season in earnest, I know what you're all thinking about.  Disco balls.

What else turns a ho-hum party into a spectacular event with the flick of a switch?  Disco ball.  What else, the moment you lay eyes on it, tells you exactly what kind of happening place you've just entered?  That's right, a disco ball.  What item lives solely to spread fun and excitement?  You know the answer: a disco ball.

When did this paragon of fun originate?  I bet you're thinking it was first used in disco clubs in the 1970s.  Well, in thinking that, my friends, you would be incorrect.

  • A lot of people have varying opinions about when the disco ball first appeared on the scene, and where.  Many people think it was in the disco era.  That's when they got the name disco ball.  But they lived under another name for a long time before that: mirror ball.
  • Many people say that the mirror ball made its first major appearance in Casablanca, which was released in 1942.
    • Still others say that the mirror ball first appeared in the 1920s, during the Jazz Age.  These folks typically cite a German silent film, Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Großstadt (Symphony of a Great City), which was released in 1927.
    • The film is a tour of the city, a day-and-night-in-the life of Berlin in 1927, but what you see is thematically organized.  There are sections about transportation, about machinery, the military, work, lunch time, leaving work, leisure time, sports, vaudeville shows , more sports, nightlife, and finally, fireworks.  It's actually pretty cool to see what people doing ordinary things on an ordinary day looked like in Berlin in 1927.
      • But wait, it couldn't have been Woeste who invented it because I found still more mirror balls that pre-date his Myriad Reflector.
      • The Wisconsin Historical Society has a photograph from around 1912 which includes a mirror ball.  The photo is of a sun parlor (solarium) in a hospital which treated (or probably more accurately, housed) tuberculosis patients and the insane.  The tuberculosis patients were encouraged to sit in the sun parlor to relax and take the air.  Suspended from the ceiling is none other than our good-time friend, the mirror ball.
        • But wait, there's more.  The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 103, which likes to describe details of its history, mentions the use of a mirror ball at one of its celebrations very early in the Brotherhood's existence, in 1897.
The February, 1897, issue of the "Electrical Worker" discusses the Third Annual Ball held on on January 6, 1897, at Roughaus Hall, Charlestown, and of the spectacular lighting display, which could be seen for miles around Boston. The letters "N.B.E.W." were done with incandescent lamps of various colors on wire mesh over the ballroom, highlighted by a carbon arc lamp flashing on a mirrored ball. The affair was hosted by Brothers Flynn, Melville, Colvin, Smith, Ellsworth and Dacey. About 800 people enjoyed the spiked punch and melodies of Dunbars famous orchestra.
        • "Spectacular lighting display," "800 people enjoyed the spiked punch and melodies."  Oh, yeah, you bet that was a good party.
        • 1897 is the oldest date I could find.  I have the feeling that the mirror ball may be older yet, but I can't back up that feeling with any evidence.  If any of you out there know of a mirror or disco ball that existed before 1897.
          • Even so, 1897 is a heck of a lot older than I ever guessed.
            • Now that you've seen the mirror ball in use at these various locales, I know that the next time you're at a party this summer, a shindig, a get-together, heck, even a cook-out, and it's feeling a little weak, you might cast your eyes longingly about for a disco ball.
            • To rectify the situation and equip yourself with a disco ball, you actually need three items: the mirror ball itself, a motor to turn it, and a lamp to shine a light on it and cast the miraculous sparkles all about the room.
            • You can buy the standard silver disco balls, or you can go with disco balls that have all-blue mirrors, or all-gold mirrors, or mirrors of all different colors.  You can get standing varieties that sit on top of your table and spin, or stationary half versions that crouch like a small mirrored hill in the center of your dining room table and wish they could be as fun as their complete spinning, ceiling-suspended brothers and sisters.

You can see all kinds of mirror balls and sizes on our website. Also we carry the spinning battery operated hanger for the mirror balls.

Please keep checking with us to see the next colors and sizes coming in.

Facts about our tektite moon rocks !

    Real tektite moon rock

Some fact on moon rocks, item # RK010

Tektites, in the simplest terms are pieces of natural glass. Several natural glass types are found on the Earth. By outward appearance some tektites resemble obsidian the commonest of the natural glasses. Microscopically, tektites resemble glass more than obsidian in that they are almost completely devoid of any mineral crystals in their composition. The tektite glass is homogeneous in nature with the elements it contains dissolved and mixed. Tektites have much less water in their composition than obsidian's (often a thousand times less). Also obsidian's when heated will foam from the gases and water they contain and this is one method of tektite testing.. At the same temperature tektite glass may produce a few gentle bubbles. Tektites are made of a glass which melts at a far higher temperature and it is far more viscous.

Where did tektites come from? There have been several schools of thought over the last hundred years, but basically today it distills down to the Earth through the impact of a meteorite or comet. Tektites are fun to collect and websites that have tektites for sale can also be a good source of images.

In a cratering event, soil and rock are liquefied, or vaporized. There is question as to how long the tektites took to form and how high they were ejected. Was it a simple trajectory or did they travel high nearly into space? It is clear that part of the time they traveled at very high speed for they had to traverse great distances. The Australasian strewnfeild is thousands of kilometers across. It is thought by impact theorists that they are shaped in a plastic state as they spin. Later there may be some mostly minor shaping by ablation. In regard to the Australites, it is clear from

cross sectional analysis that they are a remelted object. Unlike the other tektites they received a major part of their final shape by ablation. However, the button portion of the posterior side has internal flow lines unchanged by remelting while those on the incoming ablated side are turned an pulled. Clearly, the internal structure was established and set, before the hypersonic ablation in the atmosphere.

Current chemical analysis of tektites indicates that there is a relationship to rocks only found on Earth. Fifteen rare earth elements have been used to show that their relative abundances are in exact relationship to their abundance in tektites. Including an anomaly in the amount of Europium. This depletion of Europium is connected to calcium and CO2 chemistry on the Earth. This depletion is exactly recorded in tektite glass. Melting a granite like rock will essentially make tektite glass composition. Oversimplification but actually close since many sedimentary rock thought to be used for tektites are derived from granites.

Tektites come in many sizes however, complete splash form types fall in the range of from one inch to four inches. Their weight in the 10 to 100 gram range. (Please excuse the generalizations, this is for the readers who have not seen them and have no idea of the exceptions that the tektite enthusiast will be familiar with.) They can be much smaller and much larger than the figures above, but for a simple average the range given may be useful.

Tektites are not usually smooth, they are usually pitted or grooved or a combination of both. More often than not they have a bald spot which is smooth. Many attempts have been made to explain the pitting. It has been thought to be from exposure to chemicals in the ground. Another explanation is that it is part of their form received before landing, perhaps during flight in the atmosphere. The inside of broken bubbles will often be shinny showing almost no etching, yet it has been exposed to the same chemicals for the entire time the tektite has been on earth. The back un-ablated side of as will often be textured and old looking while the ablated front surface and both surfaces of the flange will appear very fresh. Again the time spent in the ground was of course the same. The mechanism of texturing may be a process called spallation. Pieces of glass pop out of the surface coming through the atmosphere. Some experimentation has confirmed this as a possibility.

Tektites have been found with other artifacts in archaeological sites dating back thousands of years. They have a long history of use and significance to man. Ancient man in many places took advantage of the glassy nature of tektites and used them for making flaked tools. Later, they were considered to have religious significance in Asia, the colorful green varieties (Moldavites) of Europe have been used for jewelry for hundreds of years and are making a return as gems today.

Tektites are not found everywhere on the Earth. They are found in strewnfields; which are areas where the material has fallen upon the ground and the material is confined to the boundaries of the strewnfield. Tektites are found more or less randomly within the strewnfield. In the case of meteorite strewnfields the heavier fragments will be found at the farthest travel end of the dispersion ellipse.

Facts and history of the mexican flag

      Mexico flag # FL179

    http://www.noveltiescompany.com/products/mexico-3-x-5-flag-3005

Over the years, the free printable Mexican flag colors have remained the same, but the colors pertaining to the flag meaning has changed.

The flag colors have been in existence since 1821, but the flag we see today with the meaning of the colors has been in existence since 1968. The coat of arms displayed in the center of the flag is used to set the flag apart from the flag of Italy, which uses the same flag colors.

The flag images show the coat of arms as a eagle holding a serpent while perched on top of a cactus that appears to be set atop a rock above the lake.

The flag symbolizes independence in the color green, religion with the color white and union with the color red. After the change in Mexico that separated the country from President Benito Juarez, the color meanings changed.

The green symbolized hope, white was unity and red was blood of the heroes. However, the World Encyclopedia of Flags has mentioned that the color green means hope, white purity and red religion. The flag history is complicated with the rise and fall of the government over the years. The flag photos over the years have shown how the flag has changed in design as far as the coat of arms, but the colors have remained intact.

Facts and history of the Great Britian ( British flag )

Some history on the great Britain  ( British flag )

In 1603, the year of Queen Elizabeth I's death, England and Scotland existed as completely separate nations, each with their own monarch and parliament. Elizabeth, being a spinster and therefore childless, expressed a deathbed wish that her cousin, King James VI of Scotland, be named as her successor to the English throne. Thus, the Scottish monarch was projected into the unique position of ruling two nations simultaneously. He ruled Scotland as King James VI and England as King James I.

Scottish National flag in 1606: white diagonal cross on a blue background

    Scottish National Flag
The English national flag at this period consisted of a simple red cross fully imposed upon a plain white field, this being the emblem of St. George, England's patron saint. The Scottish national flag consisted of a diagonal, or X-shaped, white cross, fully imposed upon a medium blue field. This was the emblem of St. Andrew, Scotland's patron saint. In the spring of 1606, to symbolize the monarchical unification of the two nations under himself, James created a banner to this end, by fully superimposing the English red cross (with a narrow white border to represent its normal white field) upon the Scottish flag. This became known as the Union Flag, and it was the forerunner of the present flag of Great Britain.

Union Flag 1606-1801: combination of English and Scottish National flags

    Union Flag 1606-1801
In the decree of issuance of the new flag, James stipulated that all ships of both English and Scottish registry were to fly this flag from atop their mainmasts. The Cross of St. George was to be flown from the foremasts of the English ships, while the Cross of St. Andrew was to be flown form the foremasts of the Scottish ships. As the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery were of English registry and did not embark upon their historic voyage until December of 1606, it logically follows that on this voyage their flags conformed to the royal decree of the preceding spring.

Irish National flag: red diagonal cross on a white background

    Irish National Flag
The Union Flag, created by James in 1606, continued in use as a purely symbolic banner until 1707. Then, during the reign of Queen Anne, the parliaments of England and Scotland were united to form the new nation of Great Britain, and Anne officially adopted the 101 year old banner as the national flag of the newly created nation. In 1801, when Ireland became a part of Great Britain, the Union Flag was redesigned to include the Cross of St. Patrick (red, diagonal), the patron saint of Ireland. It is in this form that the British flag exists today.

Facts and history of the brizilian flag

    BRAZIL FLAG #FL141

    http://www.noveltiescompany.com/products/brazil-3-x-5-flag-2968

Would you like to know some interesting facts about the history of Brazil’s flag and how it came into it’s current manifestation?

The modern flag of Brazil was adopted on 19 November 1889. It had a green field with a large yellow rhombus on it. There is a blue circle bisected by a white band which has the words "Ordem e Progresso" on it which translates to "Order and Progress".

The blue circle on the first flag had 21 stars on it, one for each Brazilian state and one for the Federal District. It is said that these stars represented the night sky on the day that independence was declared.

Unlike the U.S.A. every Brazilian state is represented by a specific star on the official national flag of Brazil. At this time there are 27 stars on this flag meaning Brazil now has 26 states.

The meaning of the colors and symbols are for another discussion although this is too important and interesting to pass up. The yellow is suggestive of the mineral riches of Brazil.

Between 1500 and 1900 Brazil yielded more gold than all the rest of the world put together. Blue of course is the sky and green the riches of the Amazon rain forest.

Brazil has a rich Portuguese culture and language. It has a cosmopolitan lifestyle.

Saint Patrick's day is coming upi soon! Stock up on green beer party glasses!

    ST. PATRICK’S DAY

Every year on March 17, the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the globe observe St. Patrick’s Day. What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods and a whole lot of green.

"Saint Patrick’s Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick’s Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick’s Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, “wearing of the green,” music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!"

    Facts about the dream catchers

Dream catchers are one of the most fascinating traditions of Native Americans. The traditional dream catcher was intended to protect the sleeping individual from negative dreams, while letting positive dreams through. The positive dreams would slip through the hole in the center of the dream catcher, and glide down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The negative dreams would get caught up in the web, and expire when the first rays of the sun struck them.

The dream catcher has been a part of Native American culture for generations. One element of Native American dream catcher relates to the tradition of the hoop. Some Native Americans of North America held the hoop in the highest esteem, because it symbolized strength and unity. Many symbols started around the hoop, and one of these symbols is the dream catcher.

    What is a Dream Catcher?

Dream catchers are arts and crafts of the Native American people. The original web dream catcher of the Ojibwa was intended to teach natural wisdom. Nature is a profound teacher. Dream catchers of twigs, sinew, and feathers have been woven since ancient times by Ojibwa people. They were woven by the grandfathers and grandmothers for newborn children and hung above the cradle board to give the infants peaceful, beautiful dreams. The night air is filled with dreams. Good dreams are clear and know the way to the dreamer, descending through the feathers. The slightest movement of the feathers indicated the passage of yet another beautiful dream. Bad dreams, however, are confused and confusing. They cannot find their way through the web and are trapped there until the sun rises and evaporates them like the morning dew.

Originally the Native American dream catcher was woven on twigs of the red willow using thread from the stalk of the stinging nettle. The red willow and twigs from other trees of the willow family, as well as red twig dogwood can be found in many parts of the United States. These twigs are gathered fresh and dried in a circle or pulled into a spiral shape depending upon their intended use. They used natural feathers and semi-precious gemstone, one gemstone to each web because there is only one creator in the web of life

Long ago when the word was sound, an old Lakota spiritual leader was on a high mountain and had a vision. In his vision, Iktomi, the great trickster and searcher of wisdom, appeared in the form of a spider. Iktomi spoke to him in a sacred language. As he spoke, Iktomi the spider picked up the elder's willow hoop which had feathers, horsehair, beads and offerings on it, and began to spin a web. He spoke to the elder about the cycles of life, how we begin our lives as infants, move on through childhood and on to adulthood. Finally we go to old age where we must be taken care of as infants, completing the cycle.

But, Iktomi said as he continued to spin his web, in each time of life there are many forces, some good and some bad. If you listen to the good forces, they will steer you in the right direction. But, if you listen to the bad forces, they'll steer you in the wrong direction and may hurt you. So these forces can help, or can interfere with the harmony of Nature. While the spider spoke, he continued to weave his web.

When Iktomi finished speaking, he gave the elder the web and said, The web is a perfect circle with a hole in the center. Use the web to help your people reach their goals, making good use of their ideas, dreams and visions. If you believe in the great spirit, the web will filter your good ideas and the bad ones will be trapped and will not pass.
